The song was written by the band‘s guitarist and singer, Hope Sandoval, and guitarist, David Roback. It was produced by Roback. The song received positive reviews from music critics. AllMusic‘s Matthew Greenwald called it “one of the most achingly beautiful songs of the ‘90s“. Pitchfork‘s Jess Harvel described it as a “hazy, dreamy ballad“. Rolling Stone‘s Rob Sheffield placed it at number nine on his list of the “100 Greatest Pop Songs of the ‘90s“. The song was a commercial success, reaching number 44 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the United States and number three on the UK Singles Chart. It has been used in various television shows and films, including the television series The OC, and the films Donnie Darko and The Fault in Our Stars.
