Deacon Blues Chords
Deacon Blues is a song by American jazz–rock band Steely Dan, released as the second single from their 1977 album Aja. Written by band members Donald Fagen and Walter Becker, the song features a complex arrangement, with layered saxophone and vocal parts. It topped the Billboard Hot 100 chart and has become a staple of 1970s rock radio.
The song takes its title from a nickname given to a character in the novel Go Tell It on the Mountain by James Baldwin. The narrator in the song is a down–and–out character who dreams of a better life. The lyrics tell the story of a man who has hit rock bottom and is now looking for a way out of his despair.
Musically, the song features a slow, bluesy groove with a complex arrangement. The horns are provided by a horn section arranged and conducted by Paul Griffin, and the saxophone solo is performed by Wayne Shorter. The vocal harmonies feature Donald Fagen and Walter Becker, along with the Doobie Brothers‘ Michael McDonald and David Palmer.
