The song was written about McCartney‘s love for his girlfriend at the time, Jane Asher. “Love Me Do“ was the Beatles‘ first single, released on 5 October 1962 in the United Kingdom on the Parlophone label, and on 25 February 1963 in the United States on the Vee–Jay label. The song peaked at number 17 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and number four on the Cashbox chart. In 2013, Rolling Stone ranked it at number 122 on their list of the “500 Greatest Songs of All Time“.
