The song was inspired by a real jazz band that Knopfler saw performing at a club in Deptford, London. The band, called the Sultans of Swing, was made up of musicians who played traditional jazz music on the streets and in small clubs. Knopfler was impressed by the band’s skill and energy and decided to write a song about them.
